There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than any
darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose
sight of this force when there is suffering, too much pain. Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the
lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary
ways.
-- Mother Teresa
The musical Quilt
is told from the survivors' point of view. We
hear from a mother who lost her son; we hear from a neighbor that lives
next door. Each person made the Quilt panel for
someone who died from an AIDS related illness -- for someone they loved. It is about the people who have come through their
despair; they suffer and then they turn their grief into an optimism that
transcends their loss. We identify with their
struggle, and ultimately, their growth becomes our own.
Originally produced as
part of the International Exhibition of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial
Quilt in 1992, Quilt
premiered at the Smithsonian Institution in a production that was
videotaped by the New York City Library of Performing Arts at Lincoln
Center. Since then, Quilt has had over 100 productions in the United
States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia. Quilt
is licensed by by Music
Theatre International, and received exceptional notices and standing
ovations in the first of two different productions in London.
