Michael Stockler
was born in Detroit, Michigan. He began studying
piano at the age of 6 and began composing at the age of 16. He attended summers at the Interlochen Center for
the Arts for 3 years as he prepared for life at the University of
Michigan, where he studied music theory.
By the time he
graduated three years later Michael had accompanied Madonna's modern and
ballet dance classes, musically directed David Allen Grier in a student
production, took William Bolcom's composition class and musically
directed Jean Stapleton and many other Equity actors in summer stock.
Since college,
Michael has learned to slow down, though as a student in New York
University's music therapy program he also managed to work on eight
productions as a musical director and pianist. Michael
was the original pianist for the workshop production of March of the
Falsettos at Playwrights Horizons, and became musical director when
the production successfully moved into Playwrights' larger theatre
downstairs.
Upon graduation,
Michael began a five year stint as a music therapist. Michael
was inspired by working with people and seeing how the music touched them. He began devoting more time to composing and has
been writing music seriously ever since.
While
working with new technologies as a Wall Street assistant commodities
trader, Michael found an affinity for computers. He
began as a word processor at an investment banking firm, but training
requests soon poured in. Since 1994, Michael has
worked as a computer consultant while devoting most of his time to
composing for the theatre.
Quilt debuted at the Smithsonian
Institute in 1992. After receiving an NEA grant
to complete the musical arrangements, Michael went back to composing and
working as part of an elite unit of computer software trainers in New
York City.
Still
living in New York, Michael has musically directed more than 50
productions and composed nine shows.
